Jung's Synchronicity and Tarot:

A Psychological Discussion of Selected Cards

Lecture by Stephen Foster, Ph.D.

Friday, September 29, 2006, 7 pm

Entry: $8-members, $10-non-members

Tarot is a series of images that has been in existence for centuries. Many of the images are similar to alchemical images and can be approached psychologically in the same way that Jung approached alchemy. In 1952, Jung proposed his theory of synchronicity: “an acausal connecting principle,” “often linking the psychic and material worlds.” If one were to draw a card from the Tarot deck and view it as a synchronicity, then we can ask the question, “What is the psychological significance of this image at this time?” In this lecture, Dr. Foster will explore the personal and collective psychological significance of the Tarot cards Death, Temperance, and the Devil.

Stephen Foster is a Candidate with the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts, Denver Seminar. He has a M.A. in Psychology from Regis University and a private psychotherapy practice in Boulder . Interested in the psychology of C. G. Jung for over 20 years, he has worked with Tarot cards for over 25 years, including lectures, workshops, and professional readings. He holds a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry and works in the environmental field.

The Archetype of Meaning
Lecture by Cindy Smock , M.A., LPC, CAC-III, and Jungian analyst

Friday, October 27, 2006, 7 pm

Entry: $10-members, $12-non-members

Jung once wrote: "A psychoneurosis must be understood, ultimately, as the suffering of a soul which has not discovered its meaning." Think about that. Looked at in this way, the question of meaning is no longer a ridiculously unanswerable philosophical question. It is a deeply urgent personal question which must be answered individually and lived authentically or our soul suffers: we flounder; we lose life's direction; courage and confidence fail us.

This talk will look at the archetypal quest for meaning and its implications for our lives and for the healing sought through psychotherapy.

Cindy Smock is a Diplomate Jungian Analyst who has her private practice in both Gunnison and Denver . In addition, she is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Certified Addictions Counselor III. Cindy has been interested in Jung since 1973. For many years she has also been interested in Zen Buddhism and in how these two powerful traditions can communicate with each other.

Jung and Gnosticism: In Search of the Pearl of Knowledge

Lecture by Bob Bongiovanni, M.A. and Jungian teacher and therapist

Friday, November 17 , 2006, 7 pm

Entry: $8-members, $10-non-members

Bob will explore some of the central texts of Gnosticism—the gospels of Thomas, John, and Philip, and The Hymn of the Pearl —and explore the ways in which these beautiful works parallel and expand a Jungian framework for understanding the deeper meaning of human life.

Beginning in 1918, Carl Jung began a decades-long exploration of Gnosticism, a philosophical and religious system with roots deep in human history that was ruthlessly suppressed by the early fathers of the Christian church. In Gnostic scripture he found many parallels for his own discoveries about the psyche—the existence of the collective unconscious, with the transcendent Self at the center, speaking to us through dreams and synchronicities as we journey through a worldly life of seductive illusions.

Bob Bongiovanni has taught courses and lectured on Jungian topics for over 15 years. As a public health professional, he has applied Jungian principles for health promotion and social change, particularly in the fields of community mobilization, substance abuse, and HIV prevention. He holds a M.A. in Community Psychology from Regis University and was certified by the Jung Association of Teachers and Therapists in Denver .

My Search for Manhood and Wholeness

Jungian Odyssey by Paul W. Burke

Friday, December 8 , 2006, 7 pm

Entry: Free-members, $5-non-members

The December Jung Society lecture takes the form of an odyssey, with a person from our community reflecting on their life journey and on their search for meaning from a Jungian perspective. Paul Burke gives us a brief overview of his journey.

Growing up largely without parental intervention as an attachment-deficiency-disordered, latchkey, only child to conservative atheist parents, I learned to perform and created an impressive persona. As a 26-year-old Airborne Ranger Army captain, Vietnam veteran, West Point graduate, husband and father, I somehow did not think of myself as "a man."

After the military, my major associations were work, the Republican Party, and a men's service club. Though my life seemed to go well, I was never really satisfied or peaceful. At age 47½, a spiritual call severely interrupted the continuity of my life. After moving to California , the spiritual "honeymoon" of about 4 years ended in the Fall: almost total personal deconstruction. Betrayed in love, my wealth squandered, I was "homeless." My inner child felt totally abandoned. Thus ensued the Dark Night of the Soul.

Paul Burke, B.A., is a writer, editor, facilitator, and pilgrim. Mr. Burke is the founder and facilitator of "Life, Meaning, & Videotape," a movie-based dialogue program that looks for meaning in life. He has had a varied career including process facilitation and visioning; community service; meeting and event planning and facilitation; communications; project management; organizational management and operations; public relations, marketing, and business development; government and politics; design, development, planning, and research; and computer technical work.

***

The Two Great Mythic Cycles: Quest and Death/Rebirth

(Saturday morning lecture & workshop)

***

Conceiving the Personal Myth
